If Genius Is 90% Perspiration, I've Got It Made

I turned in the fifth draft of my novel to my agent today. Yes, you read that right: five drafts. Five drafts, four years. You can actually deduce a great deal about me from this fact, namely:

1) I am a slow learner
2) I am dogged
3) I am prolix
4) As--was it Flannery?--said, "I don't know what I think until I see what I write."
5) I have a very, very patient and encouraging agent
6) who is also a very, very good editor
7) I am the lucky recipient of a Tall Doctor Working His Ass Off At The Hospital Fellowship
8) I have a flexible, reliable, all-around-wonderful babysitter
9) whose presence allows me to write exactly nine hours a week
10) I really, really like to write

Congrats, Bihari! I was lucky enough to read the first (or maybe second?) draft, and THAT was great, so I can only imagine how accomplished go-round #5 is. Excelsior!

HMPH! Hate you now. With the novel, and the agent, and the doctor-husband (see MFA Mama for why I want to marry a doctor in my next life)...de-blogrolling you out of sheer spite.

Congratulations! Although this will seem like a breeze after you get published and face the greatest of authorial perils: the Q&A at a certain bookstore we love.

Rock on, Bihari my love.

Can't wait to read the final version (is this the one that was very partly written at our house when you came to visit after the first boy?)

In your acceptance speech at the National Book Awards (do people even make speeches at that?), please remember to thank all of us who plagued you with hypochondriac questions and demanded free medical (and psychological)advice. No, really, I'm sure it helped you round out any irritating characters in your book.

Congratulations!! I will look forward to the announcement of a lucrative deal.

Ohhh, YES!! I am so very excited and thrilled. So THRILLED! (And you know exactly who this is, as I just wrote the same thing to you in an email.) ;)

Congratulations. I can't wait to see the book on the shelves.

Congratulations! I am both awed and jealous. Whereas in the past three (or is it four?) years since I met you in Workshop, you have had two children, AND have taken on a part-time job as an ER nurse, AND have written five drafts of your novel, I have had one child, have taken on a measly part-time teaching job, and have accumulated a computer full of partly finished short stories and an abandoned novel.

You are an inspiration to all new-ish mom writers. Actually, to all writers, period.
